UBE2C (ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2C) is a protein coding gene. Proteins modified with ubiquitin are able to target abnormal or short-lived proteins for degradation. Ubiquitination uses three classes of enzymes: ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1s), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s), and ubiquitin-protein ligases (E3s). UBE2C is necessary for the elimination of mitotic cyclins and for cell cycle progression, and is believed to be involved in cancer growth. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. Pseudogenes of this gene have been found on chromosomes 4, 14, 15, 18, and 19.
