Spermidine/Spermine N1-Acetyltransferase 1 (SAT1) is a protein coding gene that belongs to the acetyltransferase family. Considered a rate-limiting enzyme in the catabolic pathway of polyamine metabolism, this protein catalyzes the acetylation of spermidine and spermine. It also participates in the regulation of the intracellular concentration of polyamines and their movement out of cells. Mutations in this gene are linked to keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD). Alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified for SAT1.
