SIRT5 (sirtuin 5) is a protein coding gene that is a member of sirtuin family of proteins which are homologs to the yeast Sir2 protein. Sirtuns are involved in a variety of cellular functions including gene silencing, histone deacetylation, chromosomal stability, and aging. Members of the sirtuin family are characterized by a sirtuin core domain and grouped into four classes. Research speculates that the human sirtuins may function as intracellular regulatory proteins with mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. SIRT5 is a class III sirtuin family member. Several transcript variants exist as the result of alternative splicing.
