GCN5, a putative transcriptional adapter in humans and yeast, possesses histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. GCN5 HATs operate in multisubunit complexes (e. g. , SAGA and ADA) to acetylate lysine residues in histone tails, preferentially those of histone H3. Also, GCN5 is required for the activation of a number of genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis, respiration, and other pathways controlled by the SWI/SNF gene products.
