PRMTs (Protein Arginine N-Methyltransferases) can monomethylate or dimethylate arginine residues by transferring methyl groups from S-adenoxylmethionine to the guanidine nitrogen of arginine. PRMT2, also called Protein Arginine N-Methyltransferase 2, methylates arginine residues in proteins, for example histone H4, STAT3, and FBL. With NCOA2, PRMT2 has been shown to act as a coactivator of transactivation mediated by the androgen receptor (AR) and also, with estrogen, PRMT2 has been shown to coactivate estrogen receptor (ER)-mediated transactivation. It may also be implicated in growth regulation processes.
