Transforming growth factor alpha, abbreviated as TGFα, belongs to the family of epidermal growth factors. It is synthesized as a transmembrane precursor on the cell surface and proteolytically processed into a soluble mature protein that functions as a growth factor in an endocrine, paracrine, or autocrine manner via the binding of its epidermal growth factor receptor. Upregulation in the expression levels of TGFα has been observed in several types of human solid cancers that include the head and neck, lung, breast, stomach, colon, kidney, liver, ovary, and skin cancer. TGFα also functions as a potent angiogenic mediator. This suggests that TGFα supports the development of cancer by directly mediating the growth of cancer cells, and tumor-induced angiogenesis.
